“Hope is an orientation of the spirit and orientation of the heart. It is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out.”
Václav Havel, playwright and first President of the Czech Republic

Our mission is to help stroke survivors and their families reclaim whole and meaningful lives through small groups and storytelling classes.

Every 40 seconds someone in the U.S. has a stroke - the leading cause of adult disability in our country. Most of us survive, but have lost our familiar patterns of thinking, feeling and acting. Those who care about us can become overwhelmed and uncertain.

Understandably, most rehabilitation programs focus on regaining lost function. Some of us return home. Then what? What do we dare hope for now?

As Marriage and Family Therapist, educator and stroke survivor, Carol Howard Wooton observed her own experience and listened to the stories of her clients and students. She heard a compelling unmet need. In response, she founded Keeping Hope Alive to grow a community of peers in which everyone touched by stroke is encouraged to face and even embrace the catastrophe, grieve and re-form shattered identities, risk breaking open, and ultimately, shape full new lives.
